Filmmaker Creates 16K Video on a Mac
More news about Martin Lisius of Stormstock and Prairie Pictures and his home-brew16K video system.
Since 2018, Prairie Pictures filmmaker Martin Lisius has been producing 16K video content. His first project to utilise this cutting-edge format was a short film showcasing the storms of America’s Great Plains titled, “Prairie Wind,” To capture a spectacle as big as the sky, Lisius developed a 16K camera system and began shooting. “Once I tested and tweaked filming on 16K, I was surprised to see how smoothly it went. The real challenge came in post-production.” Lisius said.
Enter the ubiquitous Mac. There, Lisius meticulously stitched shots from two cameras to create 12,000 16K resolution images (15,985 x 5792 pixels each). Those were divided into shot batches of about 300 images and coloured using Adobe Lightroom, then output to Apple Final Cut Pro and rendered. Each shot batch required a minimum of five days to prepare with the computer working around the clock. Two powerful external fans were utilized to keep the 8-core Mac Pro Desktop from overheating.
“Apple may not officially support 16K video on the Mac yet, but technically speaking, it does. It handles everything I give it and is scalable and forgiving.” Lisius said. “It behaves ahead of its time.”
